Mexico has a lot to offer in terms of literature, arts and even music. It is also known that Mexico has one the largest tourism industries in the world. This popular tourist destination has loads of things in store for you. One thing that has intrigued me apart from the really intense and spicy Mexican food is the traditional Mexican clothing. The traditional Mexican clothing is quite different from the modern Mexican clothing but this holds true for many cultures. Due to globalization, the modern Mexican clothing is quite similar to the clothing one sees in many cities. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of traditional Mexican clothing that was worn since the ancient days.
Different Styles of Traditional Mexican Clothing:
Vivid and strong colors form a part of the traditional Mexican clothing. Mexican clothing has a major use of fabrics such as cotton and fibers such as bark and agave. Native Mexican and pre Hispanic civilizations mainly used such fibers to make traditional Mexican clothing. The Spanish introduced wool and silk later on.
The huipil is one such beautiful garment that forms a part of traditional Mexican clothing. Huipil can be described to be a sleeveless tunic or can be roughly said to be a sack-like garment. Generally cotton is used for huipil but at times one can even see the use of wool. Here rectangular strips of cloth are cut in varied lengths, either long or short and this can also be either wide or narrow in width. Only women generally wear the huipil garment. Here the fabric is woven and embellished with motifs that tell a story of the old folklore.
The quechquemitl is another such garment that I have come across which can be called as traditional Mexican clothing gear. This garment is one of my favorites and when one speaks of the Mexicans, this is what crops up in my mind. This garment is almost cape-like in its appearance where the head has to pass though the center opening and the corners of the fabric are left hanging on four sides. For those who are not yet getting the basic idea of the quechquemitl, you can rummage through your wardrobe and take a look at the very stylish poncho. It is not only the Mexican women who adorn the quechquemitl, the poncho is one such ubiquitous garment and has often made a comeback in the fashion scenario. Generally, one can find the use of hand woven cloth in the creation of the quechquemitl.
The rebozo is another kind of a garment that can be included in the Mexican clothing. The rebozo is worn by women in Mexico. The origins of rebozo cannot be placed correctly; experts say that the rebozos originated due to the intermingling cultures that were colonized by Spain. It is also noticed that the term rebozo has not made its appearance in the Spanish language till the year 1562. The rebozo is rectangular in shape and these are found in materials like cottons, silk, wool or even articela. The rebozo is also worn as a shawl or a scarf. Women also use the rebozo to carry goods to the market.
When one speaks about Mexican clothes, the Puebla dress is also one such kind that belongs to this category. The Puebla dresses and the Puebla blouses generally have short sleeves and loose fits. The Puebla dress was also known as the Boho dress later on.
The Mexican folklore dresses are used by the traditional folk dancers and are very fancy in their overall look. The design of the upper half closely resembles the Puebla blouse. The design of the lower half is also fancy and in many tiers. The traditional Mexican dress is more about comfort due to the breathable fabrics. The traditional Mexican clothing was all about comfort and letting the body be at ease with the kind of temperatures faced. This kind of a dress is long and flared and has little puffed sleeves.
Another factor I have noticed about traditional Mexican clothing is the amount of embroidery used. You can get a glimpse of beautifully styled and colorful embroidery on the Mexican peasant dress and even other garments. These embroideries are also known to use symbols that have a specific meaning behind them.
Skirts also formed a part of Mexican clothing and these are generally rectangular in shape. This is worn by wrapping it around the body and tucking one part of it towards the inside.
The Mexican sombrero forms an integral part of Mexican clothing. This term simply refers to a kind of a hat that has a brim. The brim acts as a way of protection from the sun. Such sombreros were generally worn as a part of traditional Mexican clothing. The peasant sombreros are generally made of straw whereas some are even made of felt, which inclines towards the expensive side.
Traditional Mexican clothing is still sought after by many with many websites that offer options to design and create your own traditional Mexican garment. This would help you obtain your own creation no matter how far you are away from Mexico!

Fancy dress parties have been popular since the 18th century in Britain. They date back even further in other parts of the world, in Venice for instance, masquerade balls were held as far back as the 15 century. Guests would use masks to cover their faces and hide their identities. These events were elaborate dances, usually only held for members of the upper classes and were very grand occasions. Later in the seventeenth & eighteenth centuries costume parties became more common in mainland Europe and the UK.
Nowadays more emphasis is on the costumes themselves and making them resemble clothing from around the world, both historic and from modern media, such as film & TV.
Super Hero Fancy Dress Costumes
Popular mens' fancy dress costumes are things like super hero outfits, particularly X-Men, Batman and The Incredible Hulk suits. These sorts of costume are favoured by men as they give them confidence by creating the illusion that they're bigger than they really are. Most of these costumes feature fake muscles down both the arms and legs.
The fact that super hero outfits are often bright yellow or in the case of the 'Incredible Hulk' costume; bright green, doesn't seem to bother the majority of those that wear them. I suppose just by wearing them, they will look silly, so if they are an embarrassing colour, then this should not matter.
Back to school fancy dress has become a common theme for parties, to the point at which nightclubs regularly hold school uniform themed nights. Though most mens' fancy dress for this sort of event is based on black trousers, white shirts and a school tie, some men dress up as a head master character.
Some fancy dress parties are themed around Roman costumes, where men and women wear Roman style togas, sandals and even laurel leaf headdresses. Other popular styles of mens' fancy dress themed from around the world are 'Arabian' costumes, 'Mexican Poncho' outfits and 'Hawaiian Shirts'.
More and more men are choosing fancy dress themed musical eras such as the '50's', '60's' and '70's'. With costumes styled like Teddy Boys jackets, 'Elvis' jumpsuits and hippy outfits.
Mens' Fancy Dress Ideal for Groups
Some men choose certain styles of fancy dress costume when planning to go out in a group, choosing to all dress the same to make sure they get noticed. Ideal costumes for groups are policemen costumes, Robin Hood and cave men outfits.
If a group of men and women go out together, then they may choose fancy dress costumes which show both sides from a theme. Examples of this are doctors & nurses, cops & robbers and cowboys & 'Indians'. All the men wear one style of fancy dress, whilst all the women wear another style.
This is ideal for those who like to go night clubbing in fancy dress as opposed to an actual fancy dress party, where guests prefer to look different. Though going out in too big a group can see you getting turned away from some venues unless you book in advance.
Hollywoods' Influence on Fancy Dress
Fancy dress costumes that have become more popular for men are pirates, mainly due to the success of films such as 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. A knock-on affect of this has been an increase the number of skeleton outfits and ghost costumes being worn. These costumes traditionally would only be worn in great numbers during Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night themed fancy dress parties.

Many people go about the whole process of wedding planning with the misconception that only Mexicans should deal with Mexican wedding dresses. They miss the unique touch that such a garment brings to a simple ceremony. As the Mexican culture is rich, their selection of wedding dresses is also very rich. History is responsible for this. There are traits similar to western dresses but the differences are fascinating.
Mexican wedding dresses proudly express the Spanish influence on Mexican fashion. There is still plenty of room for innovation. The traditional white, full-length wedding gown may not adequately fit in to contemporary wedding styles. The huipil is an excellent dress choice. It has bold, elaborate designs and patterns that add color and drama to any wedding theme. The decorative stitching adds a touch of sophistication. If a wedding is thematic upon the beach, the planner should consider this dress. Its seamless design complements the sun, sand and surf.
The traditional mexican wedding dress in such a setting might end up being restrictive; gather dirt and dust as well as clash with the theme of the day. A guayabera, a typical Mexican Wedding shirt won by the bridegroom has similar bold expression to the dress.
Mexican Wedding Gowns for the Conservative
Ceremonies planned for the more conservative couples also have options under the 'Mexican gowns' title. Such gowns fall straight to the floor; have long sleeves and veins to bring out a feeling of innocence and purity. These Mexican wedding gowns make use of choice materials. The most famous is silk. It is a natural fabric and offers comfort to its wearer. It is sleek and subtly expresses style.
Mexican wedding dress styles
For the Flamenco look, a combination of a fitting dress and bolero jacket effortlessly does it. In the arm of a groom in a matador jacket, the look gets even better. If he is ready to wear a matching pair of skintight trousers, 'perfect' describes the final look.
The bridesmaids and flower girls outfits may have ruffles to add dynamism to the entire setup. There are many accessories available, besides the ubiquitous fan. If a wedding is slated for the wintry months, a quechquémitl adequately deals with the problem. It is a relatively thick cape draped off the shoulders and falls smoothly to the floor.
The enredo is not a bad idea either. This full, wrap-around skirt guarantees protection from cold, simultaneously providing style. The option to mix and match is open to the adventurous kind. Nevertheless, the aspects of color-coding apply.
The final verdict
The world is a global village. Varieties of cultures have great wedding ideas. Wedding days are very special and require the input of creative planners. The role of a wedding dress is to confer beauty on the wearer. As far as style and color go, Mexican gowns have said their piece. They are easy to make, widely available in stores and kills the monotony that characterizes contemporary weddings. Its unique style will have everybody in attendance agape in awe and will carry wonderful memories for years to come.
